Monks of Mellonwah review

The Monks  of Mellonwah have come pretty far. The Australian band won "Best Indie Rock Band" at the 2012 Artists in Music Awards in 2012 and they have toured some pretty big markets in  the US. One listen to their new EP, "Neurogenesis",  and its easy to hear what the buzz is about. The bands influences seem to range from classic rock, prog and radio friendly 90s alt rock. In less talented hands using those influences as reference points could be a disaster of overblown indulgence. But the Monks are all about taste and restraint. Thick rock riffs that don't bog down the songs, epic choruses that aren't cheesy. post grunge melodies without the posturing and deft musicianship without  self indulgent wanking, The Monks make it look easy and it's not. You can detect traces of the Silversun Pickups and Muse but it's only hints not a rip off. Call it confidence or maturity or whatever you want, but this is an EP from a very focused band.
